I’d like to cut the PC, but  IOS5 doesn’t improve podcasts at all. For being so keen on clouds and syncing, it’s surprising they still don’t offer a way to subscribe to podcasts without being shacked to iTunes.

However there is relief! There are quite a few podcast managers available now. I started with Podcaster but soon changed to my favorite, Downcast.

Downcast has been a very stable app with lots of options yet the interface still remains simple. That’s a hard balance to achieve. For each podcast you can override the global options, such as how many to keep. And the built in swipe-gesture controls are fantastic, because they make the app very usable in a car.

So really cut the PC and download one of these apps.

It’s only beta 1 and things may change, but the reminder app could be a little better. It’s a simple list of todo type items that can have a due date, and can be checked when done.

But the location triggers are what interested me, there is a lot of potential here. I suspect why apps previously have not done this is no api for getting location without draining the battery existed. It’s only a guess, but if so, more capable apps may appear when IOS5 is released. Finally, Apple blinked and as reported on MacRumors, they have removed the overly-restrictive terms that forced apps selling content to price the content lowest on apple, and give them their cut. Continue reading »

Vibration is in Accessibility

Sometimes accessibility options options offer some goodies too. In the first beta of IOS 5 there are custom vibration tones. This means a vibration on/off pattern that is used instead of just the steady default. I can see maybe it being useful for anyone in the right circumstance.. Continue reading »
