With the Window 8 pro offer of $40 to upgrade for anything, a side benefit is remote desktop will work for all. RDP is by far the fastest way to remotely access windows. It’s not as easy to connect as some of the competing services, but it seems like this may drive pricing of those services down.

Every time I try spotify and find another gaping hole in its content, I can’t help but think the emperor has no clothes!

When I used Zune pass the catalog was deeper than anything out there.

It could win if it weren’t Microsoft’s need to stay on ms platforms. How would Netflix have done if ms owned it? It would have been nothing.

Please Microsoft, get a Zune pass app on IOS and everywhere else and show everyone how little spotify offers!

I don’t think windows phones will sell any better by locking Zune to it and I’m certainly not dropping my iPhone for it.

These closed “ecosystems” are a no more than a myth coming from wishful thinking.

Just check your settings general for an over the air update. Mine is stalled so maybe it’s no too stable.

Well google has a new way to organize your inbox, which almost looks like sorting, but it’s not. You can “sort” by important, unread or starred. Yet you still can’t sort by contact or subject.

I can get along without it, but there are many users that stay away from gmail because of this. What bothers me is Google’s stubbornness when it comes to this. They finally caved in and allowed tags to nest like folders so you never know. Maybe someday we will have the luxury of sorting!

If you’re not a developer, it’s harder to find links. These seem to work

Also you will need the itunes beta 2 for it to be able to update to this version, at least that’s what I’ve heard.

Facebook has a way to secure your account with 2-factor authentication, but it’s not nearly as robust as Google’s. However it’s better than nothing.

Read about the setup details here on their blog. What it does is send an SMS message with a code when you use a new computer. Then you don’t have to enter it again. Continue reading »

Did you know that Google has a much better authentication system than just username and password? If you don’t here it is. I was surprised so many people don’t know about it, but they don’t advertise very prominently.

If you haven’t listed to Steve Gibson’s podcast Security Now, you’re missing some great information. It is for a more technical audience, but the advice here is good for all.

But we all use passwords, and should be informed about what is good and what isn’t. Assuming you’re smart enough not to put in your pets name, or any clear dictionary words, you might have a good password. Here’s a way to make it much better easily. Continue reading »

I’d like to cut the PC, but  IOS5 doesn’t improve podcasts at all. For being so keen on clouds and syncing, it’s surprising they still don’t offer a way to subscribe to podcasts without being shacked to iTunes.

However there is relief! There are quite a few podcast managers available now. I started with Podcaster but soon changed to my favorite, Downcast.

Downcast has been a very stable app with lots of options yet the interface still remains simple. That’s a hard balance to achieve. For each podcast you can override the global options, such as how many to keep. And the built in swipe-gesture controls are fantastic, because they make the app very usable in a car.

So really cut the PC and download one of these apps.

Finally, Apple blinked and as reported on MacRumors, they have removed the overly-restrictive terms that forced apps selling content to price the content lowest on apple, and give them their cut. Continue reading »
